What Makes Kindergarten Special at Classical Charter Schools

What Do Kids Learn in Kindergarten in NYC? And What Should They Know Before Starting?

Kindergarten is a big milestone—for children and families alike. In New York City specifically, kindergarten classrooms are vibrant, fast-paced environments where students begin building the academic, social, and emotional skills that will shape their entire educational journey. Most kindergartens in New York exist within grade schools, so, when parents make the choice of which kindergarten their scholars will attend, they should have every option available to them.

At Classical Charter Schools, we believe kindergarten is about more than learning letters and numbers—it’s about developing confidence, curiosity, discipline, and a love of learning. Our charter school system builds on the gains that scholars make in kindergarten to help us produce amazing results on state tests throughout our grades 3-8 and makes us one of the best NYC Charter Schools.

So, what exactly do our scholars learn in kindergarten? What skills do we develop to help them feel prepared on their first day? To understand our curriculum and our approach, one must first understand what kindergarten is like throughout New York.

What Do Kids Learn in Kindergarten in NYC?

NYC kindergarten programs typically follow state standards that focus on Phonics, early Literacy, Math foundations, Science and Social Studies, and social-emotional growth. While we focus on these subjects at Classical, we also excel at building routines that help scholars get used to our charter school systems.

Reading & Language Arts

In Reading and Language Arts, at Classical, kindergarteners focus on building Phonics and Literary Skills that include recognizing letters and their sounds, listening to stories and retelling key details, learning new vocabulary, and writing simple sentences

Throughout the day, scholars will receive multiple classes of instruction in Phonics so that they can connect letter sounds to words and their meaning and eventually pass beyond reading level E by the end of the kindergarten year. In addition, they also have multiple opportunities to practice writing throughout the day. Our curriculum focuses on giving scholars multiple opportunities to practice each fundamental skill so that they can master it through extended practice. Students also practice speaking in complete sentences and participating in group discussions—important skills for lifelong learning.

Math Foundations

Kindergarten Math models skills that scholars will need in higher grades, particularly the skills of abstract thinking and process-based problem solving. Scholars work on recognizing numbers, adding and subtracting small numbers, and understanding shapes and patterns.

These skills prepare students for the more advanced Math they will encounter in later grades. Similarly to our ELA program, our Math program gives scholars multiple attempts at each concept through both Math classes and Reteach classes that allow scholars to see the same concepts multiple times throughout the day.

Science & Social Studies

Science and Social Studies in kindergarten are all about engaging scholars’ curiosity with the world and people around them. Students observe, ask questions, and investigate processes related to their own lives. Topics often include weather and seasons, the five senses, the Scientific Method, people’s interactions with each other and their effects, the traditions of different cultures, and the rights and responsibilities of good citizens.

So, lessons in these subjects help scholars understand the world, the scholar’s place in the classroom, and the role that they play in New York City’s diverse ecosystem and amongst its communities.

Social-Emotional Learning

Just as important as academics is how children learn to interact with others. At Classical, we have a specific education where Deans meet with classes weekly so that scholars grow in one of our character pillars: Citizenship, Respect, Fairness, Trustworthiness, Caring, Responsibility.

Kindergartners practice sharing and taking turns, following directions, managing big feelings, asking for help, working independently, and building friendships. Classical provides scholars with an excellent opportunity to build the basic foundations for being a great student in a caring and supportive environment.
