GIVING TUESDAY
What is GivingTuesday?
GivingTuesday is an opportunity to support the organizations making a difference in the community, and in people’s lives. Fittingly, on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving, GivingTuesday inspires people world-wide to express their support and thanks to others.
About Classical Charter Schools
Classical Charter Schools is a network for four (4) high performing K-8 schools founded in 2006. Located in the poorest Congressional District in the United States, our community is typically uncelebrated for academic achievement. However, our network has a decade-long record of demonstrating that the children in this community can not just learn, but truly excel academically. After graduation, 100% of them attend college-preparatory high schools and are truly on track for a successful life.
How We’ve Supported Our Scholars and Families in 2020
As you can imagine, 2020 has been an incredibly tough year for our students and their families. This spring, New York City was the epicenter of the Covid-19 pandemic, and the Bronx suffered the highest mortality rate in the city. The impact of the pandemic and especially the economic shutdown has particularly hurt our families, whose average income of about $34,000 is the lowest in the city, and the nation.
Despite this, we have worked hard to ensure that 100% of our families get the educational program their children need, whether that is 100% on-site or 100% remote and have supported our families by:
- Purchasing 450 laptops and devices for our students
- Purchasing 100 laptops for staff to work from home
- Calling 100% of our families in the spring and fall to ask for any specific ways we can help
- Continuing to provide world class instruction both on-site and remotely
- Providing before school, after school, and weekend activities to support parenting
Of course, teaching is about relationships, trust, and connection. Thus our teaching faculty, support staff and school leaders have constructed extracurricular programs to build relationships, maintain trust, and increase connection with our scholars, and with each other. For example, we offer remote movie nights, talking sessions, and even birthday parties to our scholars, and yoga classes, Inspiration Meetings, Coffee & Donuts, and again birthday parties to staff. We need to stick together!
We're Proud of Our 2020 Accomplishments!
Even though 2020 has been one of the most difficult years we’ve had, the core mark of our pride are our scholars, who through the Classical Curriculum become liberated scholars and citizens of impeccable character. In this 15th year of operation, we relentlessly pursue academic excellence in America’s poorest Congressional District and are thrilled with the results.
Grand Opening - SBC IV Building
2020 marked the opening of a new, permanent home for South Bronx Classical IV, a $29 million, 52,000 square foot facility.
2020 Blue Ribbon Award
This year, Classical was awarded the National Blue Ribbon Award for Excellence in Education. This is the organization’s third blue ribbon award, previously winning in 2014 and 2019.
Why Donate to Classical?
Educational Inequality exists in the South Bronx
The South Bronx is one of the most underserved congressional districts in the country. Average public school pass rates range from 29 to 31 percent, among the lowest in New York State. We believe a rigorous education, one that provides scholars with a liberated life full of choices, is one of the best ways to remedy social inequality.
Classical aims to expand educational options for families
We aim to give more scholars equitable access to quality education. To do so, Classical Charter Schools strives to grow our footprint across the South Bronx to provide more children a pathway to excellence. We stand by our results and endeavor to provide this rigorous education to more scholars in the South Bronx.
How Will My Gift Support Classical?
All of this success is not possible without the support of people like you.
As we head into 2021, we ask that you consider investing in the boys and girls we serve. To give you some perspective on the incredible impact of your support:
A $5,000 gift supports the award-winning Classics Curriculum
In addition to our literacy program, scholars engage in a comprehensive Classics curriculum beyond the Common Core that includes Latin, Debate and Government.
A $2,000 gift supports one scholar to attend our Summer Learning Academy
The Summer Learning Academy offers the opportunity for scholars to gain academic ground during the summer months.
A $500 gift supports the cost of a laptop to enable a Classical student to join school remotely
Supporting all of our scholars through the transitions to and from remote learning has been a top priority. Donations help us provide the necessary equipment, such as laptops and Wi-Fi adapters, to enable Classical students to join school remotely.
A $100 gift supports the cost of printing work packets for a remote student for one year
Providing all of our parents with access to hard-copy work materials allows our scholars to learn in the manner they are most comfortable. A donation at this level offsets the printing costs of one remote student’s work packets for the year.
A $25 gift supports us to buy PPE for one teacher for the year
Since the beginning of the year, we’ve worked diligently to provide our teachers with the safest environment possible. Donations at this level allow us to continue to provide consistent, high-quality PPE for our staff.
