Bronx kindergarten admissions start with three questions: when is your child eligible, which schools would suit your family, and how do you apply? This guide helps you organize each step.
Bronx families can explore district public schools and public charter schools. The application routes and calendars differ, so it helps to keep a separate record for each process.
This guide focuses on admission to the 2027–2028 school year. If you need a school place during the current school year, contact the school or enrollment team directly about your circumstances and available options.
What age does a child start kindergarten in NYC?
Under NYCPS kindergarten guidance, children begin kindergarten in September of the calendar year in which they turn five. As a result, children born in 2022 reach kindergarten age for September 2027.
Use your child’s date of birth and intended entry year when asking about enrollment. For Classical, confirm the age requirements for the specific school year with our enrollment team, especially if you are asking about a current-year start.
Age eligibility and preparation are separate questions. If you want to understand the classroom experience, our article on what makes kindergarten special at Classical explains early learning in reading, math and other subjects.
Understand the two public school application routes
For district kindergarten programs, use the application process described by NYCPS, including MySchools and the city’s published admissions calendar.
Charter schools use their own application procedures. NYCPS explains that many participate in a common application, while families should contact each school about its process. Applying through one route does not automatically complete an application through the other.
For Classical Charter Schools, begin on our application page. It currently directs families seeking admission for 2027–2028 to SchoolMint.
| If you are exploring | Where to begin | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| NYC district kindergarten programs | NYCPS kindergarten admissions information and MySchools | Program choices, application dates and offer instructions |
| Classical Charter Schools | The CCS application page and its SchoolMint application link | School year, campus and grade options, application status and next steps |
| Another charter school | That school’s official enrollment page | Its application system, deadline and notification process |
A form that asks someone to contact you may be an inquiry rather than an application. On the CCS website, the enrollment inquiry forms send questions to our team; they do not complete the SchoolMint application.
Bronx kindergarten admissions dates for fall 2027
NYCPS has published the following district kindergarten admissions dates. These are not Classical Charter Schools application deadlines.
| District kindergarten milestone | Published date |
|---|---|
| Application opens | December 9, 2026 |
| Application closes | January 22, 2027 |
| Offers released | March 30, 2027 |
Dates were checked on October 27, 2026. Revisit the official NYCPS kindergarten page before acting on a deadline.
Classical’s website currently states that 2027–2028 applications are open. Use the SchoolMint link on our application page and ask the enrollment team for the applicable cutoff, lottery information and offer-response requirements.
Create separate reminders for district and charter applications. Add a second reminder to check for confirmations and a third to review any offer instructions.
Build a kindergarten shortlist
Start with the exact campus address and your daily routine. Think about morning travel, dismissal, childcare and whether someone else will help with pickup. Confirm any transportation arrangements with the school.
Next, ask about the kindergarten classroom. How do teachers introduce reading and math? Ask how children practice routines, request help and work with classmates. Also find out how you will hear about your child’s progress.
Classical’s Bronx school directory lists five campuses. Schools I–IV currently serve kindergarten through eighth grade. School V in Kingsbridge currently serves kindergarten and first grade. These current grade spans do not establish future-year openings; confirm the options for 2027–2028 with the campus.
Families considering the northwest Bronx can also explore our South Bronx Classical V kindergarten and first-grade page. That page describes the Kingsbridge program; it is not an application for Pre-K.
Prepare a Bronx kindergarten admissions folder
Keep one place for the information you need and the messages you receive. For example, a paper folder, a note on your phone or a shared family document can all work.
Before starting an application, have your child’s full name and date of birth, your current contact details, and the intended grade and school year available. Record any school or campus choices you want to discuss.
After submitting, save the confirmation and any reference number provided. Then add the date you applied and a note about where to check for updates.
Registration happens after an offer and can involve additional records. Follow the accepting school’s current checklist. Do not assume that every record needed for registration must be uploaded with the initial application, or that another school’s checklist applies to Classical.
Ask about support and accessibility
Your child’s needs are part of planning for kindergarten. If your child receives preschool services, has an IEP, is learning English or needs an accessible building, ask whom you should speak with about the transition.
That conversation can cover how staff communicate with families, how services are coordinated and what records will be helpful. By the end, you should have a clear contact and next step.
Classical’s family resources and student support information introduce our approach. Contact the school team for answers about your child’s circumstances.
Know what happens after you apply
Keep checking the application system and the email address or phone number you provided. If your contact information changes, ask how to update it.
District and charter schools have different offer processes. For a charter school with more applicants than seats, a lottery may determine offers. A waitlist notice is different from an offer of a place.
When an offer arrives, read its response deadline and registration instructions carefully. Ask the school to explain anything you do not understand, and keep a record of your response.
Common questions about Bronx kindergarten admissions
Can I explore district and charter kindergarten options?
Yes. You can consider both. Follow each application process separately and keep track of the instructions associated with each application.

No. An inquiry requests help or information. The current CCS application route for 2027–2028 is the SchoolMint link on our application page.
Is kindergarten at Classical tuition-free?
Yes. Classical Charter Schools are tuition-free public schools. Our application page also states that there is no charge to submit an application.
Where should I start if I still have questions?
